The National Forest covers 200 square miles of the English Midlands spanning parts of Derbyshire, Leicestershire and Staffordshire and incorporates the towns of Burton upon Trent, Coalville, Ashby de la Zouch and Swadlincote.

With more than 700 miles of paths to explore in over 500 new and ancient woodlands - the gently undulating landscape is perfect for walking, cycling and horse-riding. How big is The National Forest?
The boundary for The National Forest is fixed and covers 200 square miles. At the outset of the project, woodland covered only 6% of the area. In just over ten years more than 7 million trees have been planted trebling the woodland cover to 18%. The ultimate aim is for woodland to cover approximately a third of the Forest area. Around 87% of the trees planted are native broadleaf species.
What is The National Forest?
The National Forest is one of the most ambitious and imaginative environmental projects of today. The goal is to turn one of the least wooded parts of the country into a ‘Forest for the Nation’ to create a green link between the two ancient forests of Needwood in the west and Charnwood in the east. The Forest is encouraging alternative land use by farmers and landowners, and is stimulating business, leisure, tourism and educational activity throughout the area.
