The Bee Orchid is a unique flower with 3 pink/mauve wings and a central hairy bee body. The flower of the orchid also produces a scent like a female bee so it has evolved over the years to attract male bees which will pollinate the plant whilst trying to mate with it, pretty clever!
Recently we have recorded Bee Orchids at CONKERS for the first time which is exciting as they are declining nationally.
We have also recorded Great Crested Grebes at CONKERS for the first time and even more exciting they have nested and are currently in the process of incubating their eggs. We are looking forward to the arrival of Great Crested Grebe chicks on our Discovery Lake, will keep you updated!
Also many reed warblers have returned from Africa to once again nest in the reed beds around the lakes at CONKERS. It is soothing to sit by the lakes and listen to the beautiful warbler song. If you are patient you will also see them flitting in and out of the reeds, you can't miss them, small brown birds with a paler underside.
