Recently we have heard regular hooting calls from a male Tawny owl proclaiming his territory 'hooo-hoo-hooo' This familiar call is also used during courtship, so the male owl will be looking to attract a female and if successful they should begin nesting together in late February or March. Even though Tawny owls are generally nocturnal you may be lucky enough to see one during the day, a helpful hint is to look out for unusual behaviour from smaller birds that will join together and mob the owl in the hope of driving him away.
